DIY Excel

Basically what some folks have done is bought pure glutaradehyde and mixed with H2O. The main chemical of Seachem Excel. Seems to be working for them too. I may try it but wanted to get some other opinions before I do. Here is a link to buy the stuff

So thoughts, comments all welcome. How toxic is this stuff? What about shelf life?

How much do you intend to buy? Whats the ratio of the chemical to water? Are you buying a diluted version or pure form? I would be interested in giving it a shot as well Jeff. Let me know how much you think it takes per day, per gallon so I could figure how much would make sense. Now that I am home, I intend to be on a stricter dosing schedule.

Rob, all of that is discuss in the thread on APC. A lot of folks are doing a lot of different things. For me, Glutaraldehyde is toxic enough for me to stay away from. I'd rather spend a little bit more for SeaChem's altered molecule of polyglutaraldehyde to have some peace of mind that I'm not going to poison myself or my fish. Of course, if you do your research, your milage may vary.

Mericide-2.6% solution, no mixing, us the same as excel. 15.50 for a gallon, not sure what shipping is.

I haven't tried it yet, has anyone else?

When comparing the material safety data sheets, section 2, composition information,
I don't see where Seachem's Glutaraldehyde is different from MetriCide.
Is there really any difference?

As a novice doser, I'm very interested. As someone always willing to save a few bucks (my wife says I'm cheap - it is a very good thing she has no idea how much I spend on this hobby), I'm very interested. As someone with no idea about chemicals I have nothing materially to contribute to the conversation/discussion. A PhD in Cognitive Decision Theory does not require a background in chemistry.

Seachem is pretty secretive about their ingredients, probably because its just relabeled Glut. But apparently they use a compound called polyglutaraldehyde, which I guess make it less toxic. I dont plan on drinking any or sticking my nose in the bottle so Im not very worried about it.

Still havent found a local source.
