My Discus are breeding!

Post by Cristy Keister »

Eggs were laid 3 days ago, now 40 or so have hatched! I never thought they would make it even this far with Tetras and flagfish in the tank. This is the first try for the parents and they do seem to need some practice. I'm not holding on to hope that any fry will actually survive in this tank, but still this is very exciting to watch!

Sweet! Did you move them to the 75 or are they still in the bow front?

They're still in the bowfront. I'm still working on getting the pH and KH stable in the 75. I had a big breakout of thread algae in the 75, but Excel seems to have completely cured it - not a sign it ever even existed 1 week after treatment. As great as the plants are doing in that tank now, it's almost a shame to have to put the Discus in and mess things up! I have an abundance of Blyxa japonica that I'll be bringing to the meeting.

I don't have a camera with a macro lens to get a pic of anything small or close. They look like guppy fry except that instead of a head with eyes they sort of have a suction cup that keeps them stuck to the glass of the tank.

Mom and Dad Discus have a lot to learn. They leave the eggs/fry to get food and I saw Dad accidentally brush one of the fry off the glass sending it flying into hungry tetra mouths.

the biggest challenge, is to get the fries to attach to the parents.

Oh? They don't go to the parents naturally?

It is common practice for discus breeders to breed discus in 20 to 29 gal tanks to limit the mobility of the parents. Once the discus start turning dark and secreting the milk, the fry should latch on pretty quickly, though. That is, after they consume their egg sack. After about 2 weeks or so, the fry will accept bbs. Discus are piglets and need lots of food and water changes at that juncture.

congrats and good luck!
