Purigen

Post by Ghazanfar Ghori »

Have any of you used Seachems Purigen in your planted aquarium?
I use it fairly regularly for my reef setup with good results. Thinking about
using it for my planted tank - the 215 suffers from chronic cloudy
water - even running a UV doesn't clear it up.

Have you used it?

I haven't used it, but had cloudy water, which cleared up, after dis-continuing flake food, in favor of pellets.

It would remove nitrogen that you need for the plants. Have you tried a water clarifier? They clump together particles in the water to make them big enough to catch in the filter.

I think the 215 suffers from cloudy water because of the halogen lamps evaporate the crisp, clean, clear water too quickly. Plus given that much candela power is going to show any flaw in the water.

I have used the Clarity product from Seachem with very good clearing results on cloudy water. You might want to give that a try.

Enjoy the day.

I've tried a couple of those 'clarifiers' - both from Seachem and Kent - it didnt
help. I'm also running a 18W UV on there 24/7 - isn't helping.
According to Seachem, Purigen will take a little nitrogen and trace out - but not
anything significant.

We'll see - I put some in my setup last night - will post the results here. 8)

I have used it, I see no ill effects. I took it out for awhile but have been thinking of putting it back it.

I have a possible solution for you. Get some daphnia from Frank at next pvas meeting. Get a breeder net. Daphnia will eat the bacteria!! I actually did this once.

And if Ghazanfar wants to add RTR-type accessories*, he can add a 24/7 lighted sump with Daphnia, followed by an overlow to a Singapore shrimp tank follwed by a prefiltered return to the display. Micro-ecologies are fun.

*don't credit Dr. Adey et al, this concept dates back at least to Ghandially in his Pet Library book from the 1960s.
