Plant Deficiency Website

Post by krisw »

I ran into Zapins (handle on APC/TPT) this weekend at the NEC convention. He's done a lot of really interesting experiments to isolate various plant deficiencies. If you haven't seen his website, check it out:

It could be more comprehensive. When determining whether twisted new growth is due to a lack of boron or calcium why isn't limited CO2 relevant? I find the CO2 deficiency information confusing and a little controversial. I agree deficiencies are worth some discussion but I think, it is all-inclusive. CO2 deficiency is unaccounted for in all the descriptions given. I would prefer the "Plant Deficiency Website" provide more indicators, including those for CO2 and possibly more information on how each nutrient is used as well as what levels might be considered deficient.

It might be worth mentioning that “Biogenic decalcification”, looks like crap - unappealing in any case. The study might also note if, plants have a preference for CO2 or if CO2 transport is less taxing on the plant then “biogenic decalcification.” Sorry, can't stop saying it - “biogenic decalcification.” It is hard for me to believe that this is the only symptom of CO2 deficiency.

I have some problems with the light experiments and a problem with the light category, as is. It needs to reference the CO2 levels in Zap's experiments more clearly for one. It includes a category for limited light but it might be worth including the Tropica CO2 data, http://www.tropica.com/en/tropica-abc/b ... light.aspx

More Indicators - this could include a whole range of algae issues as well as other observations.
But, it's a lot to know, let alone try to fit on a chart. Good luck Zap.

Kris, the checklist/diagram you worked on is still my favorite, http://infographics.myaquacalc.com/wp-c ... beled2.jpg

Thanks for the comments, Mike. I agree that I love that info-graphic that you linked too. Note that Zapins provided much of the info for that. I think his site is going to a deeper level, and is very much in an experimental state. I think you have some good points on ways to improve things. I'm hoping to get him to drive one some day to discuss all of this stuff, and absorb some feedback. ;-)
