mold growth

Post by GOT MTS? »

I mixed up a 2 month supply of macros in a 2L Bottle and I'm getting mold. The mix is aqua vitro for N and dry ferts for P and K. I have a pump to dose daily.

Can I just add excel? If so how much?

IME the mold doesn't seem to effect anything. I know Cavan mentioned he gets mold in his Flourish Nitrogen and hasn't noticed any ill effects.

In the future you could try adding 0.5 g of potassium sorbate as a preservative. It's pretty cheap on Ebay.

I saw some on amazon about a buck an oz. I was wondering if it would raise K.

Yeah, it might add some K. Though I'm not certain you'd want to add any in large amounts.

I didn't think there was ever any danger in adding K?

I'm more not sure about the sorbate part of the equation.

When using excel, I've used the recommended 25 mls per liter. Now, I find adding 0.4g potassium sorbate (about 1/8 teaspoon) to one litre of stock solution prevents mold. I screwed up once and added about 3 times that once without incident. What's interesting to me is that your trace isn't getting moldy. That's where I would expect it.
