commercial fertilizer recommendations

Post by shireen »

Hi ... a friend of mine is really missing his ferrovit, but it's either hard to find or awfully expensive. So he needs to find something else to perk up his miserable plants.

He's thought about PMDD, but i suspect he'd prefer something from the store he could directly add to the tank.

Any recommendations? He uses soda bottle CO2 in a moderately-lit 55g.

thanks!

Shireen, just so you know, you can add KNO3 (for N) and KH2PO4 (for P) directly to the tank without mixing up solutions. The traces may be more difficult to dissolve directly.

That said, I dose those directly, and use Seachem's Flourish and Flourish Iron liquid fertilizers for my tanks. I recommend this method. Seachem also has Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorous products in their Flourish line which work great too, but are far from economical when compared to the dry fertilizers.

I'm not familiar with Ferrovit, but am currently using Flourish and Flourish Iron for micros & iron supplementation and am happy with the results.

Here's a nice side by side comparison of a few commercial fertz for reference.

As an invert keeper, I also like that Flourish is very low in Copper.

Ferrovit was a PMDD back in the day like Dupla Plant 24 before it and FerroPlant before that. Most were iron supplements with various unlabeled combinations of N-P-K in their mix.

Seachem's Flourish Iron is the modern equivalent.

Cheers.

I used Ferrovit for a number of years and really liked it. Around 2000 I couldn't couldn't find it anymore. I think I used to get it from Jim at Tropical Fish World?

I am using PMDD in the PPS Pro dosing and it is working for me. Find what works for you and stick with it.
