I wondered about less expensive solutions to the white eheim filters. Is there a particular kind of poly batting that people use? I seem to recall reading somewhere that some of the batting has chemicals and others do not. I would much rather just cut my own circles than paying so much for the eheim filters.B Considine wrote:+1 for generic poly batting from Michael's!
+2 for Purigen!

Purigen?

Question:
I have a question. I have been wondering about something relative to fertz and products like Purigen (or even like Seachem Prime). It might be a newbie kinda question though I have to ask:
NPK are critical macros. In many cases, we dose to get the appropriate levels including of Nitrates (Nitrogen). So, when we use Seachem Prime, in the short term, and Purigen, for a long-term, how does it impact nitrogen (nitrate) levels? Does it undo what we are doing?

Otherwise, what a great product, plus regenerative... sweet! ~T(M)~

On the Seachem site it says that "Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds." It doesn't say that it actually removes nitrates. You should write to Seachem to ask.
"Prime® also contains a binder which renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic." I use Prime, but have no trouble maintaining nitrate levels. I suspect that it isn't active for long enough to interfere with dosing.
