Benefit of powersand in the nanos?

Post by neilanh »

Now that I have a bag of powersand, it's not what I was expecting it to be.

Would there be any benefit of using it in our nano tanks?

I'm planning on using a little in my setup for sure.

As I understand it, the key factor in the powersand (which is more like power rocks, IMO) is to improve circulation within the substrate, as well as having added nutrient effects. Did I get that right?

Just feeling through the bag, the "sand" is a lot larger than I anticipated.

What's the difference between the Powersand-S and the Special-S?

I also have a question about Powersand (before I ruin my 120). Am I supposed to mix it throughout the aquasoil or do a make a layer of the stuff?

Powersand is supposed to be the bottom most layer of the substrate, capped by a thick layer of aquasoil. The largest complaint with using powersand is that it tends to drift upwards to the surface over time, looking kind of crappy. This is particular true when uprooting plant, or if you have a pair of cichlids that insist on digging! (Sorry, personal experience showing through)

Some folks have preventing this affect by using stainless steel screening overtop of their powersand to prevent it from moving up. I've always just tried to make my aquasoil layer thick enough to minimize this.

Are we allowed to add other substrates to our nano's I thought we were suppose to use only the substrate we were given?

Yes, you're allowed to use whatever substrate you want. We encourage the use of Amazonia, particularly if you have never used it. But, if you want to use another one, by all means.

Yes, the only restriction is to use the standard AGA 2.5 gallon size tank. I'm using a different homemade light fixture on mine.

Kevin,
Are you going to use big blue gravel? I thought I was going to be the only one!
