Looks like a cool way to provide a large sponge area for beneficial bacteria, plus a great way to hide the heater and other mechanics.

Julie I found this site looking at a nano shrimp tank thread, it's an overflow system but your tanks would be linked via a central pump, but it's still worth the look.
