Hey, Camera folks!

Post by ingg »

Looking for a way to get better shots on livestock, better close in shots. I need to stay a bit away from the tank, as the glass is so thick, and then I'm in digital zooms and H&B when trying to get pics of say shrimp.

Would this help me?

I'd suggest something like a Raynox DCR250 - fairly inexpensive and easy to use.
I have one if you want to try it out. Google it - you'll see some impressive results.

Keep in mind that you lose image quality with every add-on lens. Usually the more expensive lenses show less loss.

Dave - You should buy a real camera.

Ghazanfar - that would still require me to get a lens adapter/tube, right?

Mike - No, I shouldn't buy a "real" camera - I have no desire whatsoever to blow 2-3 grand on a camera and associated lenses.

While I completely respect that some folks are that into it, it is nuts to me to spend over a thousand dollars to take pictures of shrimp (or fish). I'm not a photographer, just looking for an occasional use toy. 8)

I believe this is the canon lens you're looking for for your S5 IS:

58mm Close-up Lens 500D

Looks like around $85 via Amazon. I haven't used, or reviewed this before, so do your research first.

Yep, that is the canon version - man, lenses should be lenses!

As long as it is a 58mm, you buy the adapter thingy (I think), then plug on whatever you want (I think).

Gotta have you guys eyeball my camera and figure out what'd work. Ghazanfar, please bring that lens in March, let's see what it'd need to go on ym camera - wondering if the universal jobby connector goes directly on, or what...

You need the adapter that fits your camera and then the add-on lenses just screw in. In theory any 58mm add-on lens will thread onto the adapter. The add-on macro lenses are basically magnifying glasses that are held in front of the camera. Be sure to get one that is coated, as this will help minimize the loss of image quality.
