Heating and filtration for nanos?

Post by chris_todd »

Does anyone bother using a filter on their nanos? What about heaters? If so, any brand/model recommendations? We're not planning on keeping fish in our new nano, probably just some shrimp.

Chris - I have filters on my nanos. Did you see on Saturday the different types in the fishroom. I use the Redsea Nano filters and I also use to hang-on box filter in others. I don't have sponge filters in any of my nanos - they'd work well, too.

I've been using the Azoo Palm Filter (which is the exact same thing as the Red Sea nano filter). If you keep shrimp, you'll want to put a sponge or something over the intake so shrimp (especially baby shrimp) don't get sucked in.

I have not been using a heater, and the red cherry shrimp have been OK with that, even though we keep our house fairly cool. I haven't kept other species of shrimp, but I suspect more sensitive species might need a heater. I know there are heaters meant for very small tanks, they just raise the temp by a few degrees. Here's one:

I've used the Red Sea Nano Deco successfully as well.

I've got the Red Sea nano deco filter on both of my nano tanks, they work great. I especially like how you can adjust the flow rate which is nice if you don't need a babbling brook so much as a slow stream.

Also, I've got Cherry shrimp, endlers and pygmy corys in there with no heaters. The lights seem to warm the water quite nicely during the day and so far as I've been able to tell nobody is complaining about the temp drop at night.

Oh, and neither filter or lack of heater has disturbed the Cherry breeding cycle. But I've got the intake at the shortest level so it's not pulling from the substrate. FWIW.

Don't waste your time with the Red Sea nano filter, get a Zoo Med turtle tank canister filter.

You will be much happier.
Do some research on it, you can get it for close to $30 usually.

I use the Azoo nano filter and I have 3 types of nano heaters for each of the 5 gals that work well. I have a visi-therm and 2 types of mini heaters. All work great.
