Need ideas for tying some wood.

Post by ingg »

Rescaping the 180g soon, and I have this idea about making some tree trunks.

Got the wood, soaking it now. Put it all together, multiple pieces making each piece, got them to fit great....

And then stopped and thumped myself. How the heck to tie it together and have the ties not be obvious?

Any ideas?

Zip ties would work, but easily seen.

Brown florist's wire would break down eventually, no?

Fishing line?

Crap, what else?

FYI: Reef putty doesn't work. I tried it once. :(

Fishing line is a possibility, there are new lines out that are nearly invisible underwater (supposedly).

A lot of work.....

Drill the wood and run the ties on the inside. Small holes would be easy to do.

What about epoxy or cyanoacrylate and glue them up? Cyanoacrylate sets almost immediately, so you would have to set them up before gluing.

Cheers.

I'd use fishing line - like Michael says, there are some new ones out that are supposed to be nearly invisible under water.

I think the invisible lines you guys are talking about are Flourocarbon lines. It's stiffer than traditional nylon monofilament.

Green won't work. Bare wood, needs to be invisible. Thanks for suggestions though! I need to look into fishing line options... :)

is not like green green but more like a mossy military, not sure if it comes in other colors....or take it out to dry and silicone some slate underneat...i have a similar dilemma now with a half circle-like piece of driftwood that floats, in my case im thinking about buying those bags for canister filter media and filling it with rocks and tying it in the sections of the wood inside...would that make sense to you?

Dave,
I recommend using 2 lb monofilament fishing line. I've used it to tie ferns, anubias, and mosses to wood and it's virtually invisible. Works great.
