Any reason not to buy a co2 tank on ebay?

Post by Judi »

Looking around on ebay, I'm seeing lots of used co2 tanks. Any reason not to get one of these, as long as it's got a current hydrotest date stamped on it? Local places I've talked to will swap or fill a tank from elsewhere --is there anything else I'm not thinking of?

Well, not as long as it's been tested within the last 5 years, and is in good condition otherwise. I know I just got a 5# reconditioned tank from Laurel Bottled Gas for around $68 + $12 to fill a couple of weeks ago, if you need a pricing baseline.

Thanks, Kris!

I talked to Laurel Bottled Gas this afternoon, and they quoted me $61.60 for a 5# tank, and $15 to fill it. They were the least expensive of the places I called. Some of them on ebay are going for less than that, including shipping.

Ah, that sounds about right. Was going off the top of my head. It's also $25 to test an expired tank if that figures into it.

Judi,
If you want shiny and new, you can get a new 5# aluminum tank from www.beveragefactory.com for 58.95 plus shipping. I purchased mine there. I get it filled at Laurel Bottled Gas. Also, the aluminum tanks are lighter than the steel tanks. I inquired about reconditioned tanks from them and If I recall, they are steel.

Questions for the experts :
How much will a full CO2 tank solution would cost ? without the delivery to tank part (reactor, bubble counter ).

- tank + refill . I can see 80-100$
- regulators , valves and stuff ( I do not know what should go in here )
( don't do any research , off the top of your head is fine )

Under 200 bucks at your door, Eugen, including 5 pound tank, regulator with solenoid and buble counter, diffusor, and line.

Go with the JBJ regulator over the Milwaukee if you get one of the aquarium specific models.
