Flourite Black

Anyone tried this yet?

What does it look like under water?

I assume it grows plants just like regular Flourite.

We use the flourite sand here and I like the look of the sand. It's also gentler on the loaches we have. My one major complaint about the sand is the difficulty in planting once the tank is filled. Course, could be my method of planting too

How deep is your substrate, Bridget? Not having enough substrate, may be what's causing your plants to float up as well.

No. The lack of substrate is in the revamping 12 gal. Nothing in it right now but about 1in substrate. I thought I had enough on hand. Just need to get to the store and buy more. I have about 3-4 in substrate in the 75 (maybe more in the back) but still have trouble planting. I seem to be especially hard on crypt balanase and val. I have problems with the leaves seperating from the root. Also, my vals like to come up with the forceps.

Good morning BTW :)

For the crypts/Vals, try grabbing the roots halfway down where they're a bit thicker. Enter the substrate about 3" away from where you ultimately want the plant to be, and drag the roots laterally and down, until the plant itself is where you want it. Now, hopefully, you'll have the roots anchored horizontally, instead of just straight up and down.

What would you do though if you are in a heavily planted area already and doing that will uproot other plants?

I usually just do the best I can to avoid them.

YMMV

Finger jab as deep as you can, plug the plant in to that location and cover.

It seems to work on the tanks I have tried it on excluding Mayaca which seems to require concrete to stay rooted.

Does GWAPA have a special supplier for planted substrates?
I'm want to purchase 5 bags pf Flourite Black Sand for a new 20 gal I'm setting up... Drs Foster Smith has it for 21.99 a bag plus shipping... Just wondering if I can get it anywhere for less...
Thanks,
Paul

You may want to email with AquariumGuys.com to see if they have access to it. GWAPA members receive 10% off anything from their store, and they list regular Flourite as $13.99/bag:

Coupon code can be found here:
