well my "Hey I dont need heaters" plan is failing.

Water main burst at 5:30am this morning and the repair crew is packing up for the night.

No heat
No water
Condo is at 65 now and dropping
Tanks are at 70 currently but may not make it.

This sucks...

Stove on
Oven on
Every incandescent bulb in the house on
All computers on
TVs on
Everything I can think of that creates heat without potential of fire is going hopefully keeping the condo at 65..

Isn't there a condo association to take care of the problem? That's how it works where I live, and therefore, my plan of "Hey, I don't need heaters" has been working fine. I can't imagine the association here letting the water crew drag the repairs until the next day. Anyway, I hope your heat will be back up soon. Maybe it's time to get an electrical radiator...

Actually the fire marshal made them come back not too long after they left last night.

The Tanks got down to 65 (which shouldnt be a problem I "think")

Water just came back on, still no heat (not until about 4-5pm today)

Condo got down to 58.

Big Lots has pretty good deals right now on Heater fans. Might want to get one in case it happens again. That way you could heat the whole room.

Most of my tanks are unheated - by designated heaters - that is. Multi-filtering has that effect. Only the shrimp tanks and one breeder tank lack enough motor power to sustain temps by themselves. I just found that one of the 10-gallon shrimp tanks' heater had died since last winter, so had to replace it yesterday.

To give you an idea about the fan, I picked one up for 14 bucks and it heated my 10X12 bedroom in about an hour to low 70s. We were having air flow problems from our heater as the tube was completely blocked that supplied the air. Very effective.

Up until the heat totally went out of my building, I had been using the heat dump from the motors to keep the tanks at a relatively stable temp.

This is the second time I have ever run into a serious issue with tanks, last year when we had all the rain, I had my tank in the basement which lost power due to flooding.

Rob, I was too lazy/cold/smelly last night to go do the drive from Alexandria out to my dads to pick up the heater he was offering, I am probably going to pick it up on my way home tonight though.

You might be better off to simply invest in some heaters to toss in tanks if something like that happens again. Those electric radiators work, but man do they eat up electricity!

As long as you didn't loose fish the plants should definitely be fine having had the water cooler for a bit.

Aaron is right about the electricity use but I only use it in absolutely critical times.

I dont pay for power, believe me if I did, I wouldnt have multiple computers, TVs, the Oven and Stove on to try to keep warm.

I live totally different when my condo fee includes power.
