I am pretty sure that the 90's are what is killing the flow. I know computer side that you want to eliminate or limit to absolutely minimum the amount of 90's that you use and in the case of the 501 the intake has 1 and the outlet has 2.

I am tempted to take the one I have on order in with me to HD and find some alternative parts for it.

I have a Zoomed. Initially mine was level with the tank but that was way to much flow, stuff was blowing all over the place. I added longer hose and dropped it down about 2 ft.
It's working better now with the extra head pressure. I'd still like a little less current but I'm going to leave it like it is for now.
Check your impeller and double check for trapped air.

So the zoomed is better then the Toms?

I have not found any complaints about the zoo meds blowing hoses etc..

I have found multiple complaints about the Toms.

My only complaint with the Zoomed filters is that they are noisy (loud hum). I haven't tried a Toms filter, but I was impressed with Rick Dotson's Tom filter - it was very quiet.
