Er, um, I have some Eheims that have not been opened in years, from 98/99 at least - but they are bio-only and prefiltered.

go figure...I get home from the meeting and what am i greeted with? the grinding and clanking of an airlocked filter . how ironic is it that we were just talking about solenoid failure? it shouldn't be to big of a problem, but I now stand corrected. I hate being wrong
anyone know a good way to avoid this and a good way to remove the airlock?

OK well I guess this will have bearings on this thread. Turns out the 'airlock' which i couldn't fix, was actually the result of broken impeller blades. I had another one that I let overheat (or so i thought..) which i salvaged a new impeller. ahhhh, now for water changes.

Archie - do the ECCOs have the small vent/bypass tube the regular Eheims canisters use to avoid airlock? It runs from above the magnet barrel back to the output line.

But even with that, while it is possible to airlock any canister, it should be really rare with Eheim Classics and Pros, no experience with ECCOs.

But I have also never had an impeller break in operation. I cannot count how many I have broken while cleaning them, usually from dropping the blasted slippery beasts.

My ECCO broke due to airlocking too much... not that the airlocking
did it directly, but repriming so often broke some stuff. I ran into
trouble when pushing CO2 near the 2 bubble per second region (I
know its not a good metric, but its something... I was shooting for
30ppm, would airlock around 20ppm for me at least) Easy solution
is an inline reactor, saves on gas also, unlike Ghazanfar I run mine
on the filter output rigged counterflow, don't mind the hit in
flowrate.
