Lighting for 37 gallon show tank

Post by keeperofthefish »

I'm visiting my parents for the holidays in Santa Fe, New Mexico and a good friend of ours has decided to take a shot at a planted tank. By the time I got here, she had already bought a 37 gallon show tank with an eclipse hood with about 36 watts of light. I was of course horrified with this setup, but she is an artist and designer and the aquascaping is great! I am trying now to save the tank so all the plants don't die. She did put in flourite, and I have convinced her to shut down the Eclipse and switch to an Eheim 2215. As for lighting, do you have any suggestions? I am thinking that with a tank that deep, she will need MH. The tank is in a great position to have a pendant overhead. For a 37 gallon show tank (24.5"L x 18.5"D x 21.5"H), what kind of lighting would you recommend? How much? Could I get away with a CF retrofit for the Eclipse hood? The tank is so deep I imagine that she will have to go at least 4 wpg. She wants to grow crinium and swords, but she has displayed also a lot of interest in growing a glosso lawn. I don't even know if that would be possible... I have also convinced her to dose Flourish and Flourish Excel. Can she get away without CO2 when she increases the light? Right now, the tank has basically no growth and some brown algae growing. Thanks! I'm trying to spread the GWAPA touch to New Mexico!

Dual 55 watt bulbs would give her 3 wpg which would grow anything she wants to grow in that tank. She probably can't get away with Excel if she wants a gloss lawn though, not with flourite. She'd need the CO2 to get the glosso healthy enough to carpet the front. You probably should get a glass top and a fixture and ditch the Eclipse, I doubt you can retrofit two bulbs in there.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!

I wish I could be like Mr. Sarcastic when I grow up! ;)
