Went to turn off the lights for the evening and found my little Catalina fixture (the one purchased for the 2.5 gal aquascape contest several years back--'09 maybe?) smoking. The area affected was where the bulb plugged into the wires. Anyone else ever experience this? Can the fixture be salvaged? It's been a workhorse.

Mine broke years ago; the plastic started breaking. It never smoked though; I guess it didn't have any unhealthy habits...

Re: Smoking Catalina
I guess it depends on what was smoking... the housing or the wiring.
Either way, I have a real simple question for you ... do you want an appliance that started smoking once, and could feasibly do it again, in your house?

If I could take steps to prevent it from happening again, sure. Right now, it's on the shelf next to the trash can. I have no problem pushing it in.JLW wrote:I guess it depends on what was smoking... the housing or the wiring.

Retrofit the housing with LEDs.

I replaced the Catalina on my nano with a Finnex planted plus. I love it.

Re: Smoking Catalina
+1 for retrofitting. Or ask and I'll dig up one of mine in a storage box somewhere..............if you've got the legs. I think that's the only reason mine went to the box.
