Halogen lights
Halogen lights
Will anything grow under halogens? Is the heat or the light the real problem?

I was going to build my own small fixture for a tiny planted betta bowl. It's only about half a gallon. (BTW, glass ice buckets make nice big betta bowls.) Now I'm betting a halogen would just cook the fish, and the spectrum seems a bit more red-biased than is ideal. I played with a halogen utility light for photographing my tanks and I really liked the results. The pics almost looked "sunny."
I've ordered one of those groovy LED lights so I think I'll try that instead. I'm getting one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0230535360

(currently $37)
it has two tubes - one 6500k and one "Colormax full spectrum". It's been working great on my 20 long.
BigAls currently has the 48" one (56W) for $48.
For a while I was worried I just found bargain-priced garbage. That's usually the case when I find a "steal." The unit should arrive this week; I'll let y'all know how it goes.PaulS wrote:Those are nice lights for the price. I have several.
I plan on using them on just a little betta bowl. About half a gallon, no more than 8 inches of water column. After that.... well, I suppose I could just clip it to the side of one of my tanks.krisw wrote:That's a heck of a price if they're bright enough for aquarium use.
