Indestructible RCS!

Post by ricoishere »

This weekend, while preparing to do my weekly WC, I got a cool surprise . No, not a new tank as a gift. I lifted a bucket from inside another one I use to carry some items in, and I noticed something moving around in what might have been 2oz. of water that remained from the last WC last week. It was maybe ½” in size, dark, looked like a worm. I took the pail outside in the sunlight, and realized it was a Red Cherry Shrimp! This little critter lived in a covered pail, just enough water to cover it, in 90-100 deg temp in my garage for a week! I heard these things are durable, but this is pretty interesting. I put it in a 10G tank, and this morning saw it still kicking.

I had a similar situation minus the 90-100 deg weather. Needless to say I was impressed as well.

I've bred hundreds of these guys outside in my small pond during the summer months. They've survived low temperatures (40 degrees outside) in the fall too before I pulled them out.

You cannot beat my story. Emptied out to 215G. Left it dry for 2 days. Rescaped, added water - first thing I see is a RCS swimming by. DAMNIT! DON"T THEY EVER DIE!

Yeah, I had the same thing happen with a platy once! (Still don't have any idea how that fish survived.)

Yeah that is a hard one to beat!
What was the end result? I heard high CO2 helps to kill inverts in a tank (without fish).

Do you think broad spectrum med with copper might help, like dosing Maracyn for a week?
