i have a trio since quarter size but no visual signs of wanting to pair up or anything...

You can't sex them until they reach breeding age and their genitals descend. Then you have to look very closely. The female is slightly larger and has a rounder tip where the male is smaller with a more pointed tip. You've really got to have a male and female side by side to see the difference. Same for Discus, although it's a little easier to tell since everything is bigger. :)
