Anyone ever kept these goodeids?

Post by Judi »

I picked up a pair of Ilyodon lennoni and a pair of Xenoophorus captivus at the PVAS auction yesterday. Has anyone here ever kept them?

A little reading indicates they feed on algae, so I'll need to make sure to provide plenty of vegetable matter. I'm assuming that as far as temperature requirements, etc, their needs are pretty similar to those of red tailed goodeids (Xenotoca eiseni).

Any advice on their care would be much appreciated.

Xenoophorus captivus: Neutral to hard water, 7-7.8ish. They are from Mexico and are on the endangered species list due to loss of natural habitat and introduction of non native food fish.

Pretty much the same for the Ilyodon....although their status in nature has not been evaluated.

You can expect the large fry and heavy eaters. Watch out for aggression amongst the males. Be sure not to mix these three as they could hybridize.

Thanks, Rob. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I wondered about the risk of hybridization, so they are already in separate tanks.

If I was you I would research to see if there is a educational study or sponsored breeding program for the Captivus since they are endangered. That would give you the opportunity to obtain "new blood" while getting them from a confirmed source.

Good idea. I'll hop on over to Goodeids.com and see what I can find out. If I can post anything there, that is. I'm registered, but the forum won't let me sign in!

You probably have to be approved by the forum administrator before it lets you log in.

Maybe so. I know there was a lot of problems with spam on that forum.
