A lesson to learn about overflows

Post by ingg »

When you buy small, top dwelling fish, and turn the lights out - they are going to die.

Put 14 green eye rasbora in yesterday. Fine for hours. Fine at 10pm when the lights went out.

4 left today, along with one other in an overflow that had me so pissed trying to catch him that I pulled the drain stand pipe and flushed him.

All others are in pieces along the tank floor from being chewed by impellers, or dead from suction.

GRRRR.

Learn the lesson. I just did.

I had a similar issue with my axelrodi rasboras. I lost several in the first few days because they would get stuck to the inflow of the canister filter over night. The 3 remaining ones seemed to have learned from their mistake.

yeah, this one really sucked tho.

Took my time, did my research. Found my perfect fish... I thought.

Tested out PYgmy cories in the tank, and they seem to do fine... I did scare one INTO an overflow trying to get the dead carcasses today, but other than that...

Was a good boy, did the QT for 2 weeks, all happy healthy and eating well.... then blammo, dead.

Know what really sucks? Picked up 25 more yesterday that are currently in QT. ARGH! Guess I know what goes in the 75g now.... no sense sending more to overflow suction death.

They sleep on the top of the water, didn't expect that.

Having never had a tank with overflows....Can you put a screen over the inflow?

I did on the bottom on one side - I suppose I could do the tops, but it sorta defeats the purpose, I was thinking you are supposed to let the suff go into the overflow and collect it from there. Unofrtunately, I collected about $20 of fish.

I'm pretty sure some of these died from being sucked up to it and being unable to escape, too, so that'd still happen.

Small fish and overflows do not match. If it is a high-flow system, screens do not do the job unless the intake area is huge. Fine sponge, rinsed daily (PITA) does, but NIFT.. Better to re-think the system.

or fish......I dont think that you would have this problem with Brilliant Rasboras.....would be a good complement to your Rainbows and are slightly larger, stronger to not get sucked in.

Dave

Here is a suggestion to replace the rasbora's with. Twofishguyz.com has them right now. Looks like a great fish. Profile says 2" max.
