Any Goldfish People Out There????

Post by sherrymitchell »

Hi all -- returning member here. I'm now into keeping goldfish and I might as well stand there and feed them dollar bills because they eat everything I put in the tank. I'm growing out baby fantails that a friend shipped me and have seven of them in a 75 gallon tank in my fish room. The largest is the size of a tennis ball and growing fast, and the smallest is the size of a quarter.

I'd like to scape this tank, but want to know what my options are for plants before I throw any more money away. So far they've eaten anacharis, hygro, a very tall val, watersprite, and the amazon sword (I suspect).....

Any ideas on how I can have a beautiful tank AND keep goldfish??? And please don't suggest plastic plants, LOL.....

Some the tougher plants like Java fern (3-4 varieties) and assorted
Anubias should be able to fend off attacks. No sure since I havent kept
goldfish ever since I was a kid.

I wouldn't be too sure about the anubias. My rosy barbs will sometimes eat the new leaves as they come in. The brats. :x

I've never kept goldfish either save those feeder ones I won at the carnival tossing ping-pong balls into glass jars.

Stick with Anubias and Ferns. If they eat those you are best not putting any plants in with them.

How about Naja Grass? There was a post in December about Severum and Naja Grass. I believe the Severums lost that battle.

I used some feeder goldfish to cycle a tank and American waterweed (Elodea canadensis) is the only plant the goldfish will not touch. They will un-root it if it is not well fixed but will not eat it.

I have some barbs that chew Najas Grass like candy ... I would guess goldfish are worse.

I don't keep goldfish any more (except one old feeder), as I can't keep the tanks cool enough here.

But I used to keep them in the old house. I had pretty good luck with submerse Crinums and Jungle Val, but both needed to be established before the goldfish went into the tank, otherwise they got pulled up repeatedly.

In a sense yes, the severums managed to eat an Anubias Rhizome so if I hadnt given them away it might have made for a good experiment.

Yes the severum actually chose to chow down on the Rhizome as well.

Admittedly all he did was turn it into green/brown pulp but still.

I have had good luck keeping goldfish with regular Val and some crypts. Anything that is free floating or easily uprooted like many of the mosses the goldfish will try to eat.

To keep them from uprooting plants you could use some larger gravel like flat river stone on top of the substrate to keep them from moving the gravel around every day.

Some folks have had luck with keeping goldfish with some sword plants and Anubias.
