selective breeding

If I wanted to breed my H. formosa for a particular trait, how would I do it?

Say I bred my best pair for color, would I then breed the best of the offspring back with the parent, or would I breed them with the best of a 2nd spawn of the parent pair? And would the parent-offspring pair be father-daughter or mother-son, or would it matter?

Not that I plan on this venture, just that I got to thinking after seeing all the guppy hybrids at Petsmart while buying crickets.

I dont think most fish look at parental/offspring relationships at all. I have had MF, FD, MS and every possible combo happen.

I'm sure the fish don't care. But would I, as the breeder need to take it into consideration?

They are going to be difficult to work with, the female can store sperm for quite a while so that if you do separate out a pair you might continue to see offspring without the traits you want for a while. Work with a group and continuously remove anything that doesn't have the traits you are looking for. That's about all you can do with those little guys.
