Also, I plan on setting up my 75 soon, I have 80 lbs of Black 3M ColorQuartz T-Grade, and 45 lbs of Charcoal SMS Pro.
I plan on doing a mineralized soil tank. So for capping puposes I am considering:
SMS/Turface
Pros: high CEC, cheap
Cons: light, sometimes difficult to anchor plants
3M ColorQuartz
Pros: looks nice, heavy, holds slopes well, will cap the MTS well
Cons: low CEC, leaves oily film on water surface if not cleaned well

I used a substrate calculator; for a 2" layer of sand, I would need 100 lbs, or another 25-50 lbs of Colorquartz.
For a 2" layer of Fluorite, I would need 60 lbs, or another 25lbs (half bag) minimum. SMS/Turface or Colorquartz
were not options in the calculator. Any other thoughts, ideas or suggestions.
Anyone have any SMS Pro or Colorquartz they are willing to sell?

You do not want to be using Soilmaster with mineralized soil.... just my opinion.

I would avoid the SMS with the soil as Dave said just because it is so light. It's an unfortunately large con in my opinion.

What about Flourite black sand? It would have the heaviness and CEC you want.

I guess I was most worried about the SMS/Turface's lightness causing it to be a poor capping substrate. The CEC allows the substrate to hold nutrients, for the plants to access, but since the nutrients are going to be in the subsoil with little if any water column fertilizing, it's really not that important. So I guess either ColorQuartz, Ecocomplete, or Flourite black sand are my best options. Cost is always a factor, so I was hoping to maybe use some of what I already had.
