What's your shortcut? I used potting soil (with some fertilizer added, MiracleGrow, iirc) and organic peat moss under my gravel. Everything's growing, but I did have massive algae for a couple weeks. There's probably a lot of phosphates in that potting soil I used. Algae's under control now [knocks on wood].

my "shortcut" is courtesy of mab. it is Flourite for about a 1/8-1/4 inch bottom layer, aquatic planting soil for next layer, T-grade Black Colorquartz to cap it all

so far, it has worked like a charm, with no other ferts needed, and has been running since September! plants growing well.
