First Juvi!

I was looking around in the tank today and saw something I didn't recognize. At first I thought that one of my fish had gotten sick and lost its normal coloration.

Then I realized I was looking at a 1/2" long female gourami! The male has been blowing bubble nests ever since we got him and he has always been grumpy, claiming the right 1/3 of the tank as his own.

There has been a ton of floating plants that I've not got successfully planted. It looks a bit like the Sargasso sea. This may not be the only juvi in the tank. There may well be more hiding up there.

When I checked later I couldn't find her anywhere. She's back in there hiding no doubt.

I do like the variety of activity that goes on in the tank. Plants waving in the now ample flow, snails, fish and the last couple of remaining shrimp noodling around and pecking on stuff.

The surprise addition of the 1/2" replica of the adult female honey gourami is pretty cool.

I got a pair from Exotic Aquatic about a month ago and they colored up within a couple of hours of putting them in the tank. By the next day they had already spawned while we were watching. They've had a continous bubble nest ever since.

I'll probably bring the juvis I find to the May meeting for auction after they've had some time to mature. That's if I can catch them without destroying the 'scape.

Are they that clear on sexes at that age? I thought it was typical for juvies (of various critters) to look like females until sexual maturity, then you get the dimorphism.

Could be but this one has a very clear lateral stripe that only the females have.

I'm not sure how old it is since it definitely beyond "bite size" and has a gourami shape.
