Cories Competing for a Girl?

Post by ddavila06 »

hi, today in the morning i observed that a bunch of corie cats were acting very extrange...i just added to the new tank cories that i had kind of crammed together in my holding tank and mixed them with other habitants of that set up. all the same species, aenus? (common cories) anyhow, i saw separate groups swimming very fast and smaller ones were like chasing larger ones (smaller boys, larger girls) all over...anyone ever seen this? do they compete or sometign? either way, this was very funny, im now crosing my fingers for breeding:D

My Sterba's do this, too. I was lucky enough to catch them mating (a pair in the "T" configuration) and laying eggs. The female held her ventral fins together and 2 or 3 eggs would pop into her clasped fins. Then she'd go find a spot for them and deposit them, usually on the glass, sometimes on the underside of leaves.

About a month late but in case anyone comes back, I have heard that you can often help "encourage" cories to spawn by doing a decent-sized water change using water substantially cooler than the normal tank water. I've even heard of people doing this but holding off and timing it on an evening when they were actually getting rainstorms (so lower barometric pressure). Do the water change in the evening with the cooler water and then often they would wake up the next morning with cory eggs all over. :)

Never tried it myself, but that's what I've read. You can probably find more info about it online.
