I've never vacuumed a substrate in my life, and I've never had a problem with planted tanks. Some of my tanks have been up for over five years with no vacuuming. Of course I tend to under-fertilize the water, so perhaps there is more root activity than in some heavily doused tanks.

The problem came from my pulling some of the crypts out for the auction I think. The flow issue contributed to it but wasnt the sole cause.

Either way, I redid the tank but dont like it especially after playing with a tank with a much larger footprint.

I may just break it down and sell it off like I am planning to do with a bunch of the other tanks.
