I witnessed today that an amano shrimp got hold of a snail and ate it with great gusto. That explains why there are so many empty snail shells in the tank. Mystery solved.

Oh, I need to get some of those Amano shrimp then. The snails are taking over any tank that isn't populated with puffers.....

What kind of snail? I've been crushing the micro-rams horn snails for cherry shrimp for a while. But they don't hunt them down without assistance.
