Thanks everyone. I had the most lovely 26 inch val in the tank and they got to that a few weeks ago. It's about six inches tall now.... :?

Right now the tank is bare of substrate -- easier to clean with the dirty goldies. I'm thinking about using a big piece or two of driftwood and attaching anubias and java ferns to it.... That could be rather interesting without overwhelming the tank. I had all the plants planted in individual pots in flourite with large river rock on top, but the goldfish really like to graze all day long.... It's been a real challenge to find plants they'll leave alone.

If you offer them a better alternative, like lettuce leaves or floating plants, will they go for that instead of your plants? or do they just randomly eat whatever looks tasty?

They ignore lettuce, turned their nose up at boiled zucchini, and devoured the frogbit that I floated in the tank. They graze. That's the best description for it. My pond fish all graze in the big pond outside too.

They do LOVE peas and get them once a week, but they still go after the plants when food isn't in the tank. I really think it's just their nature......

They should also enjoy duckweed. I use my tank of goldfish as a duckweed disposal area plus it gives them something to do to occupy their time.

The last time i had goldfish was because the snakehead and Arowana both agreed to leave a single survivor of each batch as a warning to the next group.

The goldfish had something to do while they were in the tank.

RUN!

I eventually had to take all the leftovers out for a week and restart the warning cycle as the Aro and Snakehead refused to eat the goldfish in the tank even after 2 weeks of no food.

Too bad snakeheads are now illegal, I REALLY wanted a pair Channa Bleheri (name or ID changed from last time I looked) but you cant get them at all.

Thanks Dave. The goldfish will LOVE that..... They are such pigs when it comes to plants.

I broke down and bought a few plastic plants for one tank. Ugh!!! I'm still holding out hope that another tank can have a nice arched piece of wood with anubias and java ferns.... I'm wondering where I can get a 48 inch gently curved piece of wood for the 75.
