Has anyone seen Dwarf Sag flower?

Post by PaulS »

I found something interesting today in my 90g. The Dwarf Sag (or what I think is Dwarf Sag) shot up a runner to the surface and a tiny flower with three white petals opened. I'm not sure it is dwarf Sag. I got it from Dave eons ago. It generally stays small, about 3", but it can grow tall, up to 12", when its crowded together into a small area. I will try to post some pics later...

Paul, Sagittaria subulata will do this constantly when it's established and happy. Congrats! I used to get these all the time in my 75G when I had it in there. Nevertheless, it's these little unexpected surprises when you walk up to your tank and find a flower or fry or the like that make our hobby so wonderful!

For those that haven't seen this flower before, here's an old picture I took back in 2006:

Kris, your pic is the same as my flower. I now know it is definitely Dwarf Sag (Sagittaria subulata). Thanks.

I think the thing that surprised me the most was how fast the runner appeared. It had to have grown 6 inches or more in a single day.

BTW, I finally found a balanced dosing regimen in my 90. No more algae, finally, and my plants are growing like mad...

Glad to hear that your dosing regimen is working! I had the same ridiculous growth of the flower stalk too, many inches in a single day.

You've sparked a re-interest in this plant for me. I think I might like to use it in my 50G. Next time you need to thin our yours, let me know, and I'll buy some from you...

I put some out in my pond a couple weeks ago. It looks REALLY happy out there. Kris, when you first got the plant is was already flowering wasn't it?

Sean, when I took that picture, it was from dwarf sag that was in my tank for years... It wasn't flowering when I put it in...
