Echinodorus palaefolius

Post by DelawareJim »

Marlene and I were at a botanic garden last month and I got talking with the aquatic plant curator. I mentioned being a professional horticulturist with a special interest in Echinodorus and Cryptocoryne, how much I admired the giant E. palaefolius in their bog garden (Think of a giant E. cordifolius about 3-4 feet tall with flower spikes about 5-6 feet long and leaves that feel like they were cut out of cardboard.), and how I would love to get a pup from one of the flower stalks sometime. So after we talked shop for about an hour, we traded cards and I went on my way.

My secretary calls just before lunch today and says a box was just delivered to the front office for me. The box is about 12 by 12 by 18 inches and weighs about 10 pounds. So I opened the box and discover I scored a pair of emersed E. palaefolius potted up in 1-gallon containers!

Hopefully in a year or two mine will look this good.

I really wish you were saying that on October 14th and I had a nice big box of Crypts under my arm. You have no idea how close I came to booking the trip this past weekend.

Oy vey! What a summer! What a month! End of the year, the damn grass and weeds just won't stop growing at home this year, I still need to expand my emersed plant rack! :evil:

I will call you about those Crypts. I will. Really.

Cheers.

Chris;

Wouldn't one of these look awesome in your new Discus tank?

Something like this?

What a great pickup Jim! I guess it pays to stop and smooze with folks when you're touring the gardens. :)

Jim,

OH. MY. GOD. That is a freakin' AWESOME tank!!! That is exactly what I was planning. I take it from the URL that it's a 350 liter tank - that's just about 90 gallons, which is what I just bought. :D Is E. Cordifolius in that tank? If so, me want... So please keep me in mind as you grow out those new plants. :wink:

Chris;

Here is the link to the journal for the tank. The guy is from Portugal, so all dimensions you read are metric. If I remember, it's 51 inches long, somewhere around 22 inches tall, and about 92 gallons.

I'm thinking about doing something similar in my 110 which I think is about 6 inches higher than your 90.

Cheers.
