Marsilea minuta and Marsilea crenata

Post by Spine »

I just got the Marsilea minuta I ordered in todays mail. The picture they have on the wedsite(pic1) were I bought it shows a low growing single leaf plant. The plant I recieved has stems about 4in. long and looks like a four leaf clover(pic2). I already have something just like it that I got from one of the mini auctions. Could this be the same plant?(I need to start writing names down) They sell Marsilea quadrifolia also and it looks like what I got. Do you think they sent the wrong plant?

I googled Marsilea minuta to find more pictures and got linked to a couple of forums were people were mentioning Marsilea crenata. Some were saying they though that Marsilea minuta and Marsilea crenata were the same thing. Anyone have a opinions on this?

Thanks

The long stem, 4-leaf plants you got are the emersed form - the leaves are thinner as well. Quadrifolia and crenata are the more common ones that you might find in your LFS. You might also occasionally find minuta in the LFS, but not nearly as often. Minuta is smaller than the other 2. They all grow emersed with 4 leaves. Quadrifolia is the one that grows submersed with some 4 leafed stems, but more single leafed stems.
