Amano uses hairgrass to give the riccia a hold fast on the substrate. When you get hair grass to grow in thickly you can tangle some riccia into it and it will spread through the stand, kinda like algae. If anyone knew how much riccia I toss they'd cry, that is untill they get it growing on their own and find out what a pain it is.
On driftwood you can use the same method as on the rocks

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.
If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!
I wish I could be like Mr. Sarcastic when I grow up!

Two other techniques... John Wheeler had some java moss growing on driftwood, he wove it into this much like the hairgrass, that was neat (it makes a mess ultimately but looks good on the way... )
My favorite technique is that of Birgit and Wolfgang from Austria, they took 2.5mm stainless steel rod, bent it into a square spiral and used this waffle to weight a whole mess of it down.. after 1-2 weeks you can't see the wire anymore. I've had a lot of success with this using 2.5mm stainless steel welding rods available from any welding supply store... this won't help much with rocks... there are hairnets, fishing line, etc..
Having said all of this, I'm done with this plant for now at least... it gets into everything and it's hard to time it looking good with the rest of the layout IMO.

those both sound like good ideas. i had some doing great on a lava rock, but when i cut C02 it all detatched and i have a ton of it floating in my 75. i had java moss growing rather nicely on my driftwood when i started, but without constant pruning and shaping it grew out of control and was in everything. I am really trying to get that effect for a 20L i am attempting to 'scape. maybe that will be the last thing instead of one of the first.
as far as foreground/groundcover plants, can anyone list some for me? java moss, riccia, hairgrass, and glosso are the few i know. i can't remember what that 'carpet-like' plant is called anymore...
thanks for the help!

Here is a couple riccia weights shots of friends tank. His riccia is top quality but at the same time requires a lot of maintenance.
