Yeah - it was a beast to get rid of. Just in time for the meeting at my house this month - bonus!

That's a bummer. I'm going to miss this month's meeting. :(

Paul Kromboltz suggested that this might be Spirogyra.
I googled some images of Spirogyra and found this one:

Thats EXACTLY what this one looks like.

Also - I heard back from Dr. Ole Pedersen. He sees the same effect of higher concentrations of Excel not working as well lower concentrations with this algae. Surprised him too. Stay tuned.

Spirogyra is not easily cultured for prolonged periods once removed from its native environment. It will sometimes survive in a well balanced aquarium.
Spirogyra is very common in relatively clean eutrophic water

Ooh, I think this is the stuff that just (as in this week) started showing up in my tank. It must have come in with some plants from the auction.

Yup, that's what I have in my nano as well. It seems to be abating, though, or at least not growing as fast as it was. But I haven't been dosing anything other than occasional Excel.

I heard back from Dr. Pedersen. Its been confirmed as a species of Spirogyra. I hope, with the information in this thread and confirmation of what this beast is, you guys can eliminate it from your setups. Nasty stuff!

Check out the pictures!

Wow, amazing pictures! So, is Excel currently what Ole recommends, or does he have alternative treatments?

Beautiful ... Now we just need to get microscopes and start micro-nano-aquascapes using different kind of algae...

I think he's been culturing it - no attempts at trying to kill it yet.
