I eventually had ot dump all my... crap, what is it really... Pogostemon Erectum! (Cavan is gonna be proud of me )...because I just couldn't shake this stuff from stems once it got in them.

Quick research finds Rhizoclonium likes shallow, hard water which tells me cut back on the lighting and use more RO water in your changes if you're mixing with tap.

Now my guess for the samples is that Ghazanfar is having some sport with us and E=200%
B=100%
A=50%
C=25%
D=0%

As purely anecdotal evidence, Ghazanfar's plants infected my 50G with this same algae, and I've been trying to eradicate it for the past few months. For me, "consistent normalcy" (if I may coin a term) has proved to slowly but surely cause it to decline. That consisted of:

1. 40 Amano Shrimp
2. 20 Yellow Shrimp
3. 3 Garra sp. (who don't seem to eat it)
4. Auto-doser for N/P + 50mL Excel per 2L solution = consistent daily dosing of macros and excel.
5. Daily dosing of 5mL Flourish + 5mL Iron.
6. Manual removal at first. Infected plants should be tossed, they're generally not curable.
7. Water changes 2X a week for the first month.

Right now, I only have it left on some Rotala sp. Araguaia which I do not want to toss, so I'm monitoring it. I probably ought to pull the stems out, rinse in a H202/Excel bath, and put back in. Lights and CO2 have remained constant throughout.

I too have it in a couple tanks as the result of GWAPA auction purchases.

I have what I thought was normal hair algae in my nano, but now I'm wondering if it's the same stuff. I think I took some pictures of it before I manually removed a bunch. I'll check tonight after I get home.

Ok, time to unveil the results.



E: 0% Excel
D: 25% recommended dose
C: 50% recommended dose
B: 100% recommended dose
A: 200% recommended dose

I think Aaron almost had the correct answer.

The results are surprising - showing that a smaller doses of Excel work better than larger doses - atleast in these jars.

Now, I will let you know - my tank is algae free - Dave is my witness!
Manual removal, followed by two weeks of healthy fertilization heavier on Phosphates (2 ppm), once a week 80% water changes, cut back on lighting intensity along with a 100% dose of Excel - and I've finally gotten rid of this super algae.

I think I'll file this under "Things that make you go hmmm..." I'll try the 25% Excel dosing in my nano with the hair algae.

Congrats on ridding it from your tank, though...at least there is hope!
