Capping potting soil
Loni, Diana definitely has her followers and for the types of tanks she does. Those tanks generally do not include aquascaped tanks, or even hardscape items as rocks/wood end up trapping the gases in the substrate, causing problems. She doesn't use CO2 relying on naturally generated CO2 from the breakdown of organics in the substrate. Unfortunately, this isn't enough for high-light setups. In short, it's not that it's not worth experimenting with, but you're suggestion to try it on a smaller scale is probably a good one.

Sigh, you always bust my bubble Kris. But every time, you've stopped me from making unwise choices that would cause mega aggita later. Both tanks I've set up in the past 4 months are doing great, mostly due to you and others advice on GWAPA.
Ok, so tell me this. Any advice on mineralizing soil with over 2 feet of snow still lurking on my property? I'm gonna haveta wait for better weather, huh?
