Clay as soil conditioner
I've serched what feels like all over the internet looking to see if anyone sells clay as a soil amendment. they sell clay to eat but not to mix with dirt....and potters clay for the hobby store seems to have more then just clay in it. like oils to help it not harden fast or some such is what the guy behind the desk said.
any pointers on where to find clay for wabi kusa/ dirt substrates

The Red Art clay has a high iron content. A few of us use it in a mineralized soil substrate recipe.

A lot of stuff called "clay" is not what you want. The air dry stuff in particular is far from what you want due to the additives that allow it to harden. Stick with the link provided above. They have locations in VA and just north of Baltimore along JFX aka I83.

You can try an art supply store, or Hobby Lobby store, something like a Malone Red Pottery Clay should do the trick.

All I have to do is dig down 2" in the yard to get an unlimited supply of red clay. I haven't tried it in an aquarium yet.

On Aaron's link the standard low fire red clay would be the one I picked. Without the grog, but the grog would really not affect things anyways.

Is the clay washed, screened and dried like delta wetland clay or used as is? Are nutrients added?Apistograndma wrote:Thanks all Yall. Now to get my plant collection back.up to.snuff!
