Aquatic plant substrate opinions please?

Post by Larry Grenier »

I read that you can find this stuff at some Home Depots. Some claim is is good foe planted aquariums. Anyone have experience with this stuff? Here's a link http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW ... mdy00.aspx

This is the time of year to get it at Home Depotl; not in the Autumn. It's very lightweight.

I have it in two tanks, and the plants do well.

I also have regular, old aquarium gravel in a tank, and those plants do well.

I'm partial to the stuff, I reckon, but don't know what the empirical data suggests.

It grows plants well, but doesn't hold them well as it is very light and moves around the aquarium a good bit when trying to plant in it. Aren't you doing a huge tank like a 125 or so? I would think you could work out a deal somewhere to get Flourite on the cheap. That would be my suggestion.

Thanks for the opinions folks; jusr looking for more affordable options. Aaron, right now I only have a 58cube and a 20H as far as planted tanks. I have an empty 29 I might set-up. Other tanks are fish-only for now. Probably do something big later. If I used this stuff, I would probably be mixed with fine gravel.
