Australian Plants

Post by bdiliberto »

I'm starting a biotope of a Northern Queensland with some blue-eyes and a few other rainbows and I am having trouble locating plants from that region. Does anyone have any suggestions for good Australian plants, or some suggested readings? Thanks.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Pogostemon stellata is found in Australia. This is the same plant as Eusteralis stellata, but "Eusteralis" is no longer the correct name.

A forum for Australian aquascapers can be found here:
http://www.freebb.com/index.php?freebb=aquascapes
but they are just getting started
You can do a geographic search here:
http://www.lucidcentral.org/keys/appw/n ... _page.html
But this is more for genus and not species.
This page has some 'native' information.
http://www.australianrainbowfish.com/index.htm
This site has some habitat info:
http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Contents.htm
This club has a plant section:
http://www.edas.com.au/
This site covers the native species and their habitats:
http://www.nativefish.asn.au/index.html
And one last club for you to look at if you still have the energy:

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!

If anyone knows of anywhere where I can get any of these please let me know. I'll probably be signing up to be a member as well, so if anyone has any of these are would be willing to sell a portion let me know also:

Azolla pinnata
Blyxa aubertii
Caldesia oligococca
Centipeda sp.
Cyperus aquaticus
Eragrostis pubescens
E. interrupta
E. spartinoides
Eriocaulon setaceum
Eriocaulon spectabile
Eleocharis brassii
Limnophila aromatica
Ludwigia perennis
Ludwigia octovalvis
Monochoria cyanea
Najas tenuifolia
Nelumbo nucifera
Nymphaea gigantea
N. violacea
Nymphoides indica
Oryza australiensis
O. rufipogon
Phyllanthus virgatus
Pseudopogonatherum sp.
Pseudoraphis spinescens
Triraphis mollis

Thanks!

I hate to say it but there are 3 maybe 4 plants on your list that are available in the hobby.

Ok,
Limnophila aromatica, available from almost any club member
Ludwigia perennis, I think at Aquarium Center or from a club member
Blyxa aubertii, from 2 or 3 club members or Aquabid
Eriocaulon setaceum, from 1 club member in a few months, maybe, otherwise Aquabid

There was a short rare plant discussion right here a week or so ago. Here's the link. http://www.gwapa.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590 Mail that guy. He might be able to find what you want if you are really interested. Might not be cheap so might not be worth it.

Good Luck,
Ben

Exotic Aquatics in Baltimore has blyxa aubertii. I would call first to confirm they have any in though.

I see azolla species on aquabid from time to time, not sure if it's that one though.
