Hmmm..... interesting indeed. Although that's not really what it looked like where I found it.... is that your final answer Cavan?
It is not murder if you're killing snails.

It's not my final answer, but a stem Jen gave me earlier this summer displays a strong desire to reach the surface and won't branch along the way. As it has grown floating, it has started to look more and more like the photo.

Hey - I always display that tendency too when underwater for a period of time.

So Ghazanfar mysteriously disappears for months and months and months and then all of a sudden he's like white on rice all over the forum? Been saving up posts for your big comeback???

You missed us, didn't you? Come on... admit it...........

Hey! Wait a minute! You are Jen? No wonder I couldn't find you here. Yeah, I don't come here enough.

Anyway, I noticed it was starting to look like a Ludwigia and looked that up. My guess it is will more closely resemble L. peploides we've seen before as it matures. It's really a floating plant, but it's got to get to the surface somehow. L. sedoides is the same way, apparently.
