Besides petstores, where's a good place to find interesting safe (I know about the Muritic acid test) rocks? Out in mother nature around here... Landscaping stores...

We found some <strong>awesome</strong> slate pieces where they've blasted through a hill to build the road (VA 267 I think). Wherever you go, just make sure that it's not a state park, and not illegal to pull over in non-emergency situations. Also, look for new home/shopping center developments. You may see exposed rock there.

Landscaping places are good to, but they're still not free, and the variety of pieces isn't near as good as in nature/side of road. See this thread:
