Container Water Gardening

Post by jerseyjay »

Ghazanfar asked me to post couple pictures of my small project from last year - Container Water Gardening. The only maintenance that was done was water tap-offs every few days. That is it ! Visit your local nursery that specializes in pond plants, purchase couple small / all-day blooming lilies, few other plants and you are all set. If you have some spare room in front or on the back of the house, I would strongly recommend such setup.

I will go into more details in my blog but for now, here are two pictures.

Looks beautiful! I've enjoyed something similar with my raised brick pond, which is more of a large water container garden than it is a pond. There are plenty of plants we grow aquatically that have beautiful flowers when allowed to grow out of the water, so you don't even have to get "pond plants." My favorite thing about these kinds of endeavors is when you get a resident frog that shows up, and hangs out in your container garden.

mosquitoes - put endlers in the container or some other hardy fish

die off in the winter - most certainly :D

That looks nice Jay. I've done similar setups the past three summers myself. I used one of those half whiskey barrels they sell at the garden center.

Jay, did you have any fish in there? It's a lovely container water garden. I especially liked the tropical water lily.

I have done something similar with large fiberglass terra-cotta look-a-like pots in my garden. They are great for growing out lotus, waterlilies, growing out propagated plants and housing baby goldfish, which I alway seem to have a lot of. I've got a 70 gallon pot that will go out to the patio this summer.

I've also heard that freshwater tropicals breed redily in set-ups like this. I'd like to try a pair of gourami in a small water container sometime.

Endlers and Cherry shrimp definitely breed in outdoor containers! (Usually in a ratio of 12 in, 250 out). :-)

I'm up for a MAN (Maryland Aquatic Nurseries) Trip. Only thing, is that in the past, if we wanted a tour, we would have to come later in the summer because the owner's too busy with the pond season blitz beforehand. So, we'll just have to decide when to go, and if we'd want a tour or not.

Question for the pondtype people.

is there any shade type plants for a pond? I might try something like this on my balcony this summer BUT I am on the limited sun side of the building.
