a 55 gal needing some recommendations

Post by eleontie »

Here is the tank 55gal...
and I need some advice for the right corner. I am not entirely pleased with the Myriophyllum tuberculatum - maybe I need to trim it better, maybe I need something else.
It can not be a too demanding plant , as I not indent to add any CO2 or fertilization to it. It has soil substrate capped with SMS, light 65W*4 compact fluorescent.
As for the foreground : either the current dwarf sagittaria wich will eventually spread or hair grass.

Eugen

A patch of one of the various Ludwigia's (arculata x repens, palustrus, repens, etc...) would look nice and should fit the bill of not being too demanding. I agree that Myrio's are hard to keep looking nice. I keep buying them every now and again, and love how they look for about a month, then hate dealing with them.

Otherwise, the tank is looking nice. I'm looking forward to seeing it after the foreground spreads.

A small color contrast is probably a good idea about a foot in from the far left of the tank. Too many light greens start blending into each other. A decent size crypt or some other plant(stem, sword, etc.) that will add a bit of color on that size. Either that or some hardscape to accomplish the same thing.

I like Jeff's idea of some taller Crypts. Maybe balansae or retrospiralis.

A nice dark green bush of Bolbitis would also look great.

I will go for the taller crypts probably.
It is hard to shape any stems in that tank as they would grow really slow. All the plants are doing well, but I can not expect anything to fill-in , trim and repeat as this cycle would take a year.

I am pretty satisfied by the color variation in the tank ( I think the picture is not as good as it should be).

The wood also needs some more decorations like some needle leaf fern and anubias here and there...

You will most likely see a similar time with crypts.

Balansae is horrid about melting in new waters. I now have it going crazy in my 180g - plants I took from my own water in other tanks - but it melted down almost completely before growing back.

Spiralis, not so much, but it is also a lot thinner, so....

I really like the repens idea, as well as bolbitis. Repens doesn't need CO2 to look great, and form really pretty top heavy bushes.
