You don't need a tripod (although it helps).
Are you looking through the eyepiece or at the screen when you take the shots?

Use the eyepiece/viewfinder. Usually it easier to tell if the subject is in focus and you should be able to hold it steady when it is against your face.

I think I got the tripod at WalMart or some other mega-mart.

Definitely not using the eyepiece, that was a horrid experience. My hands are not steady.

All of us take hundreds of pictures to find that one golden one. :-)

no see you find a golden one, I find one that doesnt look like a bad acid trip and at least enables the viewer to tell what the picture MIGHT be of.
