PROPOSED: October 10th, 10:00am: Plant Collecting Trip - MD
We've gotten lot of requests from folks to lead a plant collecting trip for newbies. We're getting to the end of the season for plant collecting, so if we don't do it this weekend, we likely won't get to it.
I'm free on Saturday morning to lead the trip. I'm thinking that we hit a part of the Rocky Gorge reservoir on Ednor Road (I think it's considered Scagsville area) where I'm familiar with a lot of species present. If we go at 10:00am, any CCA members will have plenty of time to grab lunch and head over to the CCA meeting, which is about 10-15 mins away.
I'd like to limit the trip to no more than 10 people to avoid any impact on the habitat. You're welcome to tag along and not collect too.
Most of the collecting should be on the banks, but rain is forecast for Friday night/early Saturday, so it'll likely be soggy. I'd suggest wearing boots of some sort. Also, wear long pants, as this particular location has a lot of hitchhikers.
Please post here if you would like attend, and I'll follow-up with driving directions later today.
Note: This trip is in place of the fish collecting trip we originally had planned. We didn’t have many takers for that trip, so we decided to organize the plant collecting trip instead.

Sorry, you're both wrong!
Hitchhikers are seed pods with little thorns that will stick to your skins (or animal fur) so that they're transported (hitchhiking) someplace else where they'll fall off and grow. They'll still get stuck to your long pants, but at least they won't irritate your skin that way.
I drove by the reservoir on the way home today, and it's not as dry as I thought it would be, but there should still be plenty of collecting possible. Boots are definitely recommended, or old shoes at the least that can get muddy. Otherwise, the only thing you need are a bag or two (ziplock or fish bags are both fine) in case you collect anything.
Directions:
Let's meet at the parking pull off area just north of Brown's Bridge on Brown's Bridge Road (Ednor Road turns into this). Here are directions from I-495:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 38609&z=12
- Take exit 30A for US-29 N/Colesville Rd toward Columbla 0.1 mi
- Merge onto Colesville Rd/US-29 N
- Continue to follow US-29 N 2.4 mi
- Take the MD-650 N/New Hampshire Ave ramp 0.2 mi
- Merge onto MD-650 N/New Hampshire Ave S 6.9 mi
- Turn right at Ednor Rd 2.0 mi
- After 2 miles, cross over Brown's Bridge, and pull over immediately to the right in the dirt parking area.
Remember to check this thread tomorrow before you leave. I will post in the morning by 9:00am whether or not it's a go, as it's supposed to rain tonight.
