Splitting the auction by type of plant and requirement poses one problem. As it stands I do my best to mix things up as far as who brought items to auction. In other words, I try not to auction 3-4 items in a row from the same seller to keep things fair to the sellers.

Also, I like that it makes people pay attention because they don't know what's coming next.

ok you said you like to mix it up when you auction.

assuming that the plants are split to oh say

Easy - A (place in water, turn on light and watch grow)
Medium -B(needs actual light, some ferts, does better with Co2 but not impossible to grow)
Hard - C (Ghaz cant grow this)

Instead of auctioning all the easy then the medium then the hard.

mix it up and just randomly grab.

But then that still requires us to announce what type of plant it is. ;)

Honestly, I'm fine doing it the way it is. We got through 130+ items last time in just over an hour.

Im not saying dont say what kind of plant, I meant to avoid describing each plant every time over and over again.

(first time)
Anubias nana petite: stick in water, dont bury the rhizome, will grow slowly! etc..

(second time)
Anubias nana petite:A

etc as needed.

If sorting is really necessary: Instead of having the auctioneers sort all the plants, there could be 3 labeled boxes or laundry baskets into which the seller sorts their own plants. Then the auctioneer can randomly pick plants from the baskets. Beginners will just have to pay attention to which basket the item comes from.

Also, maybe sellers should be required to fill out a seller sheet before the meeting. Download from website and fill out at home. I can modify the seller sheet that PVAS uses.

I'd be happy to help at the auction table when/if needed.

Good ideas Cristy....like the basket thing as long as they are labeled ...I would have to see the seller sheet to understand....didnt fill one out at the last PVAS auction I was at.

Great auction yesterday everyone. I got a lot of nice things to plant up tanks and put in the pond. Thanks for the terrific "Indiana" lily Jim. It got potted up and put in the pond as soon as I got home and the pads are at the surface today. It must have grown upwards, two to three inches overnight!

Anyway, I got hit with a radical idea regarding auctions once I got home.

Why not set all the plants out in one place, say on the floor of a big rec room, and put sheets of paper under each one, so people can write in their bids -- Like a Silent Auction. Plants could even be grouped according to Easy/Medium/Hard, or by lighting requirements, whatever.

We could then have a long walk around time before the meeting, where people could read about the plant on plant tags, or the bidding sheet (which is prepared before the auction), then bid by writing in an amount on the sheet.... The club meeting would then go on as planned, and afterwards there would be time to walk through the items again and bid. THEN, each item would be given to the highest bidder -- the person who wrote in the highest bid on the paper. The auctioneer could even announce how much the plant went for.

All the info could be entered into the computer using the seller sheets. People could talk at will without the auctioneer having to talk above the crowd to quiet everyone down. (I know how frustrating that is. I teach teenagers, LOL). At the end, people could settle up like we always do.....

I don't know. Maybe it's too much of a change from the way things are normally done, but it's an idea.
